What is Your Motivation

What is Your Motivation?

As time goes on it seems like the mindset of our society is changing at a more rapid rate than in past years. More than ever before, we are becoming more self centered and egotistical. It no longer is good enough to voice our opinion, we now feel the need for everyone to accept our ideas. The result has been devastating. Now our actions are motivated by everything from anger, to money, to popularity, even our feelings have become a source for our long term decisions.

This humanistic mindset should not be the prevailing strength of a child of God. If we allow anything that is of " us" to drive our motives, we have lost sight of why we are here. After a person has trusted Christ as their Saviour, we are no longer to be controlled by the things of this world. Since we have been bought by the blood of Christ, our bodies are no longer our own. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Because of a transfer of ownership, we need to look to God's word for instructions and behavior in life. Romans 12:1-2 tells us that it is our reasonable service to have our thinking and actions transformed by God's will and not to continue being conformed to this world's ways.
The motivation of our life should change when we realize that we are not earning God's love, but instead that His love is unconditional. Now we serve Him because of His love, not to gain His love. Colossians 3:23 reminds us that our motivation is to do all things from the heart, " ...as to the Lord, and not unto men;" Verse 24 goes on to tell us that the Lord will reward us for the right motives of good works.

So this week, as life happens, what will be your motivation and response? With the Lord's help, we can live a life that is dead to our selfish ideas and brings glory to God the Father. May God help each of us to keep a close check on our motives.
