Let's Learn to Obey

" Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you." John 15:14-15

One of the most common difficulties that every home faces is to practice obedience. As adults, we often only think about children in regard to obedience, but in actuality, we face the same challenges.

A mistake made way too often is parents punishing their children for behavior that has been taught in the home. As parents, we should never encourage the wrong behavior in our children by telling them how cute they are when misbehaving or by laughing at a filthy word they have picked up from the wrong influence. We can only honor the Lord in our training when we teach the difference between right and wrong, and hold them accountable to do right.

As Christ is speaking in the above passage, He tells us that in order to be His friend, we must obey His commands. He goes on to say that friends are different than servants in that servants only know what to do, but friends know why they are to do them. He then calls us friends because he has made known unto us all that we are to do and why we are to do them.

I am afraid we often are guilty of expecting the right behavior without teaching the right behavior. This not only happens to parents, it happens on the job, in the schools, and in society everyday.

God has given us His complete word and, within the pages of scripture, lets us know what pleases Him. The only reason for our lack of obedience is our lack of knowledge of God's word. The more we learn of Him, the more we can please Him.
