How Did We Get Here?

" Now these are the commandments, the statues, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:" Deut. 6:1
" Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage." Deut. 6:12

As 2015 comes to an end, we can look back and see what God has done over the past ten years at Heaven's View Baptist Church. We can also look back at our lives and families and see how God's word has influenced and changed us. Whether you have been attending this church from the beginning or you are visiting for the first time today, the fact remains, looking back reveals the results of our decisions.

This passage in Deuteronomy not only tells us what God gives us to obey and teach, but also warns of the danger of forgetting the Lord. God is using Moses here to instruct Israel and remind parents that we should instruct our children and grandchildren.
Verse three of this passage says that we should
" observe to do it". Verse seven goes on to say " thou shalt teach them diligently" and " talk to them". Teaching our children and grandchildren is more than sending them to school and to church, it is walking according to God's word in our own life and letting them see how the Lord cares for His own.

Verse ten and eleven speak of the wonderful and blessed place that God has for the children of Israel while reminding them that it was not planted or built by them. God provided it ahead of time for their comfort and pleasure later. That is what God does, He cares for His own.

In the twelfth verse we find a word that seems out of place in this story; " beware". This is not a warning of wild animals or physical danger that awaits, this a warning of forgetting the Lord. You see, the Lord knows what we need before we do, and if we obey His word, He will provide a comfort and peace the world knows nothing about.

As Christmas has just passed, and your children and grandchildren most likely received gifts in the comfort of a home with family and friends, would you take time to talk to them about what they have and remind them that they didn't build the house and it wasn't them who provided work and income, it was a gift of God! And, not only that, He was working on it before they even came along.

By this simple lesson, we can teach our children about faith in the Lord, and be less likely to forget ourselves that He loves us and has done so much for us in the past to help us in the present.

May God Bless,
Pastor Darrell Roe
